Elegant Japanese‑style tray dating to the Napoléon III period, a refined expression of the Orientalist taste that shaped European decorative arts in the second half of the nineteenth century. Made of black lacquered papier‑mâché, it features a rich figurative decoration inspired by Japanese imagery, with figures in traditional clothing, scenes of music and daily life, oriental architecture, and landscapes rendered in warm tones with golden details, in keeping with the aesthetics of japonisme.
The oval shape with scalloped edges and side handles highlights its original function as a decorative and serving tray, while today it stands as a fine display piece, ideal as a period home décor accent or collectible item. The lacquer retains good shine, and the central scene remains clear and well‑defined, enhancing the overall visual impact.
The tray is in good overall condition, with normal signs of wear consistent with age. A crack is present on one of the edges, visible in the photographs, but it does not compromise the stability of the piece. Overall, it is a highly decorative example, representative of nineteenth‑century Orientalist production and particularly suitable for collectors of lacquerware, Napoléon III antiques, and Japanese‑inspired decorative arts.
