This French ceramic shoe‑shaped match holder is a refined decorative antique, attributable to the production of Joseph Gaspard Robert, the renowned Marseille ceramist celebrated for his richly modelled compositions and elegant naturalistic decorations. The piece features a complex and theatrical sculptural structure, with side putti, fruits, leaves and flowers carefully modelled and painted, elements that fully reflect the ornamental style of the manufactory. On the underside appears the JR mark with a dot above the J, a characteristic and highly sought‑after hallmark associated with this workshop.
The glazed surface retains its brightness and chromatic vibrancy, while the richness of the details highlights the artisanal quality of the piece. The object has undergone careful conservation restoration, during which one of the cherubs’ heads was expertly reattached. The intervention was carried out with great precision, resulting in a perfectly integrated and non‑invasive repair that preserves both the aesthetic harmony and the historical value of the work.
The shoe shape, elegant and unusual, makes this match holder a decorative object of strong visual impact, ideal for collectors of French ceramics, enthusiasts of rare items, or anyone wishing to enrich their home with a refined historical piece. The combination of an identifiable maker’s mark, complex modelling, hand‑painting and professional restoration makes it a particularly desirable object in the antique ceramics market.
