Elegant Japanese‑style crumb tray dating to the Napoléon III period, a refined example of nineteenth‑century decorative arts influenced by Orientalist taste and japonisme. Made of black lacquered papier‑mâché, it features a rich figurative decoration with figures in traditional clothing, scenes of daily life, and exotic landscapes finely rendered and enriched with golden details and warm tones that stand out vividly against the dark background.
The shaped form with its scalloped edge and upper opening reflects its original function as a table accessory, intended for use in refined bourgeois interiors of the late nineteenth century. The piece is in good overall condition, with normal signs of wear consistent with age. The absence of the original brush, the missing tip of one of the scrolls on the border, and the restoration of a small section of the edge—visible in the photographs—are noted for transparency, though they do not compromise the overall decorative value.
This Napoléon III Japanese‑style crumb tray is an appealing collectible and a refined decorative object, ideal for enthusiasts of nineteenth‑century antiques, Orientalist pieces, and period table accessories.
