Refined devotional figure depicting the Nursing Madonna, crafted in polychrome terracotta with applied fabric garments and a stone base. The iconography of the Madonna Lactans, rich in symbolic and emotional value, evokes an intimate and contemplative domestic devotion, particularly widespread in Italy between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The Virgin’s face, marked by gentle expressiveness, features soft and natural modeling, with a warm complexion and traces of original polychromy that convey a strong sense of humanity. Glass eyes add depth to her gaze, while the posture and hand gestures gracefully accompany the act of breastfeeding. The clothing consists of original period fabrics.
From a conservation standpoint, the figure shows well-executed and declared restorations: the nose, several fingers, one entire foot and part of the other have been reconstructed, and the original halo is missing. These interventions were carried out with skill, respecting the proportions and original expressiveness of the sculpture, allowing for a harmonious and coherent reading of the piece. Normal signs of aging are present, consistent with the object’s age and materials.
This work retains significant devotional and collectible charm, making it particularly appealing to collectors of antique sacred art, historical nativity scenes, or religious terracotta sculptures with fabric garments.
